SCOTT’S LAWN LANDSCAPE
Updates
Where To Begin
Many people experienced damage to their lawns with the unpredictable weather we had last fall. We seed shade lawns in the Spring but try if possible to wait until Fall to do most other seeding. If your lawn isn't doing as well as you'd like, a soil test could show any potential problems and is a very inexpensive option. Optimal fertilization can be done in 3 or 4 applications. A 5 or 6 application process just costs more for the same amount of fertilizer that you get in 3 or 4.
Organic fertilizers vs. Chemical fertilizers
From a safety stand point, fertilizer is fertilizer. Phosphorus is Phosphorus. We use as few chemicals as necessary and can adapt a low chemical program for your lawn.
What To Plant
If you're a busy person with not alot of time to put into your lawn, we can install plantings that are easily maintained with minimal time. If shady areas are a problem for you, fine fescues are the seed for you. If lighting is a problem, ground cover is a good way to cover those areas.
What Happened To My Lawn?
Weather wise, the summer and fall seasons last year were a nightmare. It's hard to stop what the unpredictable weather can do to your lawn - grass dying, brown spots, seeding projects not flourishing... And this spring excessive rain and extended cold weather have probably delayed some of your spring seeding projects. If you are looking outside at a dead, lifeless lawn - never fear! We have the know-how to get your lawn back into tip-top condition! Give us a call or e-mail us and we will be glad to come out and talk with you about your lawn and your outdoor living needs. Enjoy the warmer weather!
Moles
Moles are a big problem in lawns especially where they are bordered by meadows and woods. They mainly feed on earthworms but are opportunistic and will eat other insects and some plants. Moles require a large area to live and hunt for their food. What normally happens is the parents live in the woods and have a new batch of little moles every year. The children are told to leave their parents territory so they come to live with you. If they refuse to leave, the parents kill them. Imagine us parents giving our children that ultimatum. People have tried shooting them, juicy fruit gum, traps, poison, peanuts, and smoke bombs. The traps are effective, but I‘ll leave the other solutions alone without further comment. A good hunting cat will pick them off when they come out of the ground at night, but we use Talpirid bait. We have used for it for years and have found it very effective. It is shaped like a worm and is inserted into a live tunnel where hopefully the mole eats it. Being blind they can’t tell it’s not a real worm.
